Closure, They Say

an old notebook viewed from the side, with drops of ink welling off the edge of the pages

closure is a chapter
of a book I loved to pretend
would never end

you cannot
change the words
once they’ve been written

but oh, how you tried
denied and
lied

rearranged or erased
the narrative to better suit
your goodbye

you struck a match
and thought the gaslit
pages would burn

but darling, I am
red water, we are
blood and fire

and closure is all the words
exactly as they were written
in dripping ink.

CHAPTER II
closure is my lips
tight and drawn
and silent

why bother with a reply?
you’ll only get violent.

CHAPTER III
closure is a
door, un-
hinged

and you
are slamming on
my fingertips.
